The 3 Nearest Test Centres Rule, Explained

Since 9 June 2026 you can't move a car test just anywhere. Here's exactly how the ‘3 nearest centres’ rule works — and how to use it to your advantage.

What the rule says

Each time you change a car test, you can move it to:

  • the same test centre,
  • one of the 3 nearest test centres to your current booking (by driving distance, avoiding motorways), or
  • the centre you first booked at (or were booked at on 9 June 2026).

It applies to car tests only — other test types can still move anywhere in Great Britain.

How ‘nearest’ is worked out

The 3 nearest are calculated from your currently booked centre, not your home — using driving distance (avoiding motorways), measured on Google Maps. DVSA publishes the exact list per centre, and it can change over time.

Example

Say your test is at Reading. The official nearest options are Greenham, Basingstoke and Farnborough. So from Reading you can move to any of those three — but not, say, straight to a centre in Birmingham.

The clever bit: if you want a specific busy centre, book first at a centre that has it among its 3 nearest — then move in when a slot opens.

Planning around it

  • New booking? You can start at any centre — the limit only applies to moves.
  • Want an earlier date at a specific centre? Make sure your current booking can legally reach it first.
  • Check your exact options with the DVSA list or our free nearest-centres checker before you choose.
