How-to guide

How to Move Your Driving Test to an Earlier Date

Moving your test forward is still allowed in 2026 — you just have to do it yourself, and within the new limits. Here's the safe, legal way to do it.

Before you start

Two things to know: you can change a booking a maximum of two times, and (since 9 June 2026) a car test can only move to one of your three nearest centres or back to where you first booked.

Step by step

  1. Sign in to gov.uk with your driving licence number and test reference number.
  2. Choose ‘change’ and look at the dates available at your eligible centres.
  3. Grab an earlier slot the moment a suitable one appears — they go fast.
  4. Confirm and check your email for the new confirmation.
Never cancel first. Keep your existing test until the earlier one is booked. If you cancel to “look”, you risk losing your place entirely.

If nothing earlier is showing

That's normal — good slots are usually taken within seconds of appearing. Rather than refreshing all day, let a notification service watch for you and send a direct link the instant a matching slot opens. You still make the booking; you just find out in time to act.

Fee-free changes

As long as you change at least three clear working days before your test, there's no DVSA fee to move it.
