Readiness

Am I Ready for My Driving Test? An Honest Checklist

Booking early is smart — but taking the test before you're ready just burns a slot and your confidence. Here's an honest way to tell where you really are.

The DVSA's five signs you're ready

According to the DVSA, you're usually ready when:

  1. You don't need prompts from your instructor.
  2. You don't make serious or dangerous mistakes while driving.
  3. You can pass mock tests.
  4. You've practised ways of managing your nerves.
  5. Your instructor agrees you're ready.

A reality check on lessons

The DVSA has long suggested a typical average of around 45 hours of professional lessons plus about 22 hours of private practice — but it varies a lot. What matters more than the raw hours is the variety of your practice: different roads, weather, times of day.

Nearly everyone has a bad lesson three or four weeks before their test and concludes they've gone backwards. That's normal — it's not a sign you're not ready.

If you're ready

Don't sit on a distant date — bring it forward. Earlier cancellations appear daily; we can alert you the moment one opens at a centre you want.

If you're not quite there

That's fine. Moving your test back so you can take a few more mock tests and practise your nerves genuinely raises your chances. Just make the call before the 10-working-day deadline so you keep your fee.
